Recognition and Visibility: Introducing the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council Rooms at Memorial Union

Memorial Union may have opened its doors for the first time in 1928 – almost a century ago – but its historic halls have been a space for change since their creation. This decade is no exception. As the social center and living room of the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus that hosts thousands of student and community groups’ events each year, Memorial Union serves as a space for learning and important gatherings. In July 2021, two integral campus organizations – the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and the Multicultural Greek...

Get to Know Your 2022-23 Hoofer Council

It’s no accident that the Wisconsin Hoofers is the oldest and largest student organization on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus. Many things have changed in the decades since the club’s founding in 1931, but a shared love of the outdoors has remained as strong as ever. One of the greatest things about Hoofers is that its six outdoors-centric clubs – Mountaineering, Outing, Riding, Sailing, Scuba and Ski and Snowboard (SnS) – are open to all Wisconsin Union members. This includes UW–Madison students, who are temporary Union members...

Legacy, Fellowship, and Recognition: Supporting Continued Efforts of the National Pan-Hellenic Council

There is no greater feeling than the sense of home and strength that comes from being a part of a community in which one feels seen and connected. Across campus, many clubs and organizations help University of Wisconsin–Madison students find the spaces or people that bring this sense of togetherness – such as the historically Black sororities and fraternities that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). A community-driven dream became a reality on May 7, when members of the NPHC gathered to witness the unveiling of nine monuments...

A Look at the Woman-Led Hoofer Sailing Shop

Hidden away on the edge of Lake Mendota, the Hoofer Sailing Shop has been a part of Wisconsin Hoofers, the premier outdoors club at the Wisconsin Union, from the start. Very few people know about this small repair shop, but Outdoor UW summer programming at the Union and much of the Hoofers’ clubs activities would not be possible without the shop’s existence.  While the shop did not open on a specific date, there has always been a need for Hoofer Sailing members to get their boats and other outdoor equipment repaired. The shop is...

Mendota Blue Movement Anniversary – The Difference You Made

The Memorial Union Terrace grew a bit more colorful temporarily on April 29, 2012, with the addition of light blue Terrace chairs at our outdoor dining and entertainment destination the Memorial Union Terrace. For decades, only orange, green and yellow chairs with our trademarked sunburst-like design have decorated the more than 40,000-square-foot lakefront retreat. These colors acknowledge and honor Wisconsin’s important farming tradition with their John Deere green, Allis Chalmers orange and sunshine yellow. The surprise addition of baby...
