Spreading Kindness: Random Acts of Kindness at the Wisconsin Union
As students, staff and faculty returned to campus in fall 2020, we, the Union team, noticed an unfamiliar quiet on campus and mourned opportunities to help make connections with the campus community. We committed ourselves to finding a way to combat disconnectedness and isolation and to inspire happiness and hope in the lives of UW-Madison students, staff and faculty through random acts of kindness at our buildings Union South and Memorial Union. Recent UW-Madison grads strike a pose on our iconic...

Happy 10th birthday, Union South! This year marks a decade since the rebuilding of our Union South. After razing the original building, the reconstruction completely transformed the look, feel and ambiance of this south campus destination. More than a decade ago, we bid farewell to the original concrete Union South, as it no longer met the changing needs of campus. Upon completion, the new and improved Union South was well-received by the campus and surrounding community, called a “south campus sensation” by an area journalist. In...

In late 2020, the Wisconsin Union was granted the extraordinary opportunity to create a million-dollar endowment for the Wisconsin Union directorship position. To do so, the Union had less than two months to secure $500,000 to match a gift offered through the Morgridge Match, a 70 million-dollar matching gift donated by John and Tashia Morgridge. Endowments are a valuable tool for non-profits like the Wisconsin Union because they provide a perpetual revenue stream that can be used to carry out the mission of the institution. With the help of...

Women’s History Month wallpaper Within each of our departments are talented women that help make the impossible happen every day. They are superheroes that tackle everything from programming during a pandemic to planning and creating intricate landscaping projects. While we work every day to appreciate one another’s contributions and to celebrate each person’s full identity, we also keep track of days meant to deliberately and thoughtfully celebrate people. One of those days is March 8, which is globally recognized as International...

There are times that test leaders’ strength, resilience and fortitude, a time when every act of kindness means more than ever; COVID-19 is one of those times. The students of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (also known as the Divine Nine) and the Wisconsin Union Directorate rose to the challenges of the pandemic and proved their dedication to making a difference, learning, community-building and leading. Each year, we highlight efforts with which you can help make a difference through your financial support during an effort called, Day of...

Living in Wisconsin, especially come springtime, you never know what curveball the weather will decide to throw at you. As much as most of us hate to admit it, snow in May seems to be just as likely as a 70-degree day in March. A Wisconsinite’s wardrobe is never dull when there’s always the possibility of experiencing all four seasons in the course of any given week. The best way to prepare for the unpredictability of these wacky weather patterns is to make sure you’re stocked up on items for every season, and luckily, the Terrace Store is...

In March 2020, many of us felt like our world turned upside down. Businesses in Madison began to close, organizations canceled events, and many of us found ourselves isolated from the people, places and experiences we know and that make up our routines and fun. We, at the Wisconsin Union, wrestled with seemingly endless questions. How would our organization, with a tradition of creating experiences, continue to build community and provide events and activities? How would we continue to support learning, growth and leadership opportunities?...
