Have Fun in the Sun With Outdoor UW

Picture this: it’s a hot, sunny day at the Memorial Union Terrace. The bright blue of Lake Mendota surrounds you on all sides. Waves gently bump against the paddleboard you’re standing on while a refreshing breeze ruffles your hair. In front of you, a sailboat glides along the water while up above, a seagull squawks, on the hunt for a snack. The scents of brats and sunscreen mingle and linger in the air, filling your nostrils with the smells of a perfect Madison summer. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, we’re here to tell you that we can make...

Pride Month Wallpapers – June 2021

Celebrate Pride Month with our new, Pride-themed, free wallpapers for your phone and computer. Our country celebrates Pride Month in June in honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which occurred when police raided a gay bar in New York City, called The Stonewall Inn, and the patrons fought back. The Riots occurred for days and started a movement to fight against laws and practices that discriminated against LGBTQIA+ Americans. We, at the Wisconsin Union, are flying the Pride flag at our buildings Memorial Union and Union South throughout June in...

Spreading Kindness: Random Acts of Kindness at the Wisconsin Union

As students, staff and faculty returned to campus in fall 2020, we, the Union team, noticed an unfamiliar quiet on campus and mourned opportunities to help make connections with the campus community. We committed ourselves to finding a way to combat disconnectedness and isolation and to inspire happiness and hope in the lives of UW-Madison students, staff and faculty through random acts of kindness at our buildings Union South and Memorial Union.  A Union employee prepares a free meal pick-up station this past spring “Everything was so...

Happy 10th Birthday, Union South!

Happy 10th birthday, Union South! This year marks a decade since the rebuilding of our Union South. After razing the original building, the reconstruction completely transformed the look, feel and ambiance of this south campus destination. More than a decade ago, we bid farewell to the original concrete Union South, as it no longer met the changing needs of campus. Upon completion, the new and improved Union South was well-received by the campus and surrounding community, called a “south campus sensation” by an area journalist. In...

Endowed Directorship Sets Wisconsin Union Apart

In late 2020, the Wisconsin Union was granted the extraordinary opportunity to create a million-dollar endowment for the Wisconsin Union directorship position. To do so, the Union had less than two months to secure $500,000 to match a gift offered through the Morgridge Match, a 70 million-dollar matching gift donated by John and Tashia Morgridge. Endowments are a valuable tool for non-profits like the Wisconsin Union because they provide a perpetual revenue stream that can be used to carry out the mission of the institution. With the help of...
