Trail Tales: Update from the Wisconsin Hoofers

From no experience to a club history-making first.

Before joining the Hoofer Riding Club, University of Wisconsin–Madison Mara Bunderson had no equestrian experience. This summer, she competed in the International Horse Show Association National Championships. She took first place in the Hunter Seat Individual Introductory Equitation Division —  the first time the Wisconsin Hoofers’ Wisconsin Equestrian Team has ever had a rider win at Nationals.

“It’s something that I’ve wanted to do since I was little but didn’t have the opportunity to until now,” Mara said. “This is my first experience competing with a team, and I’ve learned so much about what it means to be an athlete. I couldn’t ask for a better environment and team to support me.”

For generations, the Hoofers clubs have done more than help people explore the outdoors; they have helped people connect and make lifelong friendships. They have helped people grow their leadership skills, communication skills and confidence. And they have changed lives.
