UW–Madison Invited to Apply to Lead 2022 Homecoming Celebration
The 111-year Homecoming celebration tradition in downtown Madison, Wis., all starts with the talented University of Wisconsin–Madison students of the Wisconsin Homecoming Committee. New committee members lead Homecoming every year, and now is the time that UW–Madison students can apply through March 31 to serve on the executive board or apply for priority membership consideration. Leadership roles for which students can apply include president, vice president, director of marketing, or campus events chair.
Homecoming is a time-honored tradition that welcomes alumni, students, visitors and community members to a Badger celebration. Committee members and executive board leaders pay homage to the traditions, such as an iconic parade downtown, while also creating new experiences. A chance to be part of history comes with the job and so do many opportunities for resume-building and skills-building. For Committee leaders, it’s a time of both fun and learning.
“As a leader on the Wisconsin Homecoming Committee, I learned and practiced a lot of personal and professional skills. One very important skill I was able to practice was interpersonal communication skills,” 2021 Wisconsin Homecoming Committee President Grace Sexton said. “Among other skills, Homecoming Committee leaders practice time management, project management, strategic thinking, creativity, and organization every day.”
Homecoming student leaders are the dreamers and doers of Homecoming. They work together to create a lineup that helps everyone celebrate being a Badger or Badger-at-heart, from creating ways for people to gather in celebration to joining together to learn. During Homecoming, everyone is a Badger.
“You are able to get extremely creative and work with some of the brightest people in the Wisconsin Union to plan your events,” Sexton said. “Serving as president this past year was my creative outlet, and I learned so many new skills from the hardworking and fun people I was surrounded with.”
The 2022 Homecoming celebration will take place Oct. 17–22 and will feature events that these new committee executives and members create!
“My favorite event from this past homecoming was the Spirit Parade with the Wisconsin Band,” Sexton said. “We teamed up with leaders in the band and marched around campus bringing cheer and excitement to students studying, eating, or just happened to be on campus.”
The team at the Wisconsin Union, the Division of Social Education at UW–Madison, helps members and executive board leaders realize their Homecoming dreams, including introducing brand new events to the community. Sexton encourages creativity in approaching Homecoming.
“My advice to future Wisconsin Homecoming Committee leaders is to aim high with your Homecoming planning,” Sexton said. “There is no idea or opportunity that is too far out of reach, and everyone on Committee and at the Wisconsin Union is there to help you. Your choices are endless, and I cannot wait to see all the wonderful work you do in your time as a Homecoming leader.”
UW-Madison students, apply here now through March 31 to lead as an executive board leader or for priority consideration for Committee membership. Not a UW-–Madison student but know a student at the University? Let the student know about these opportunities.
