HOOFPRINTS: SnS Winter Break Trips Recap, Part 2 – “The Third Trip”
As part of the slew of SnS trips that took place in January, the trip to Lake Tahoe, better known as the “3rd trip” or “alternative trip,” provided exactly what it was mean to: an alternative to the large Steamboat Springs trip and the upcoming Jackson Hole spring break trip. Nestled at the Blue Lake Inn, South Lake Tahoe, the 19 members of the trip enjoyed just about everything, except for the one thing that ski and snowboarders need: snow! Ryan Parsons, Alternative/3rd Trip Director of SnS, said “everyone had fun even though the snow was...

As a self-supporting organization, the Hoofer Riding Club relies heavily on the generosity of its donors. Nowhere is this more important than in the talented group of school horses that help educate our members. Our herd is comprised of a variety of breeds from diverse backgrounds, many of whom have had a successful show career. Due to donor generosity, the Hoofer Riding Club recently brought in 2 horses for trial as suitable school horses. Both horses have settled in well and this week, Beauty, a 15 hand paint quarter horse, officially...

At the end of January, the University of Wisconsin Sailing Team attended Strictly Sail in Chicago. We volunteered at the convention doing jobs such as handing out wristbands, staffing the information booths and signing attendants up for free magazine subscriptions. We also sold t-shirts, which helps raise money for the team. Lots of Wisconsin fans stopped by our booth to chat, check up on the team or buy a t-shirt. On Friday, Brendan Boylan, of Wisconsin, was chosen as Commodore of the MCSA for the upcoming year during the Midwinter’s...

This January, twenty four adventurous Hoofer Outing Club members trekked to a wonderful place called Delta Lodge in Iron River, Wisconsin to cross-country ski and find snow for three days at area trails. The first night we arrived, we skied to a wonderful family-owned restaurant across from the lodge. After that, we went to Michigan, where snow was piling up. We spent the day teaching beginners and getting lost on the trail system at ABR. We spent he next few days at North Ends trail system, which crosses the American Birkebeiner trail...

Dressed in Christmas attire that included crazy hotpants, Santa hats and ugly sweaters, members geared up to enter the balmy 12-foot deep waters of the UW-Natatorium diving well. This site is both deeper and much warmer than a dive in Mendota at the Union Terrace at this time of year! The club’s Christmas tree, a bunch of decorations and glow sticks were thrown into the pool, and members entered the pool to dress the tree. Miniature reindeer and gingerbread men fell like snow onto the recently-descended divers, who also brought...

This winter break, Hoofers Ski and Snowboard Club traveled across the country to many different venues to experience the mountains of the west. One large group went to Steamboat Springs, CO, while the Alpine ski team went to Winter Park, CO. Both groups had a great time tearing up the slopes and bonding with fellow Hoofer club members. Despite the lack of snow, everyone had fun and many different activities occurred as well. One trip leader, Ella Stutz, said she couldn’t pinpoint a favorite part of the trip to Steamboat because “everything...

By Jacklyn John, Memorial Union project coordinator No aspect of the Memorial Union Reinvestment has received more attention or generated more controversy than the proposed student/Theater lounge addition directly to the north of the Union Theater. Attention surrounding any proposed addition to Memorial Union is not surprising, given the deep connection to the building among students, alumni and community members. Some members of the campus community worried that initial designs were too big and took too much space away from the Terrace,...

By Marie Renckens, membership marketing intern Renovations at the Terrace aren’t the only lakefront improvements to look forward to in the coming years. Along with these improvements will come the new Alumni Park and Shoreline Rehabilitation Project– all together named the Lakefront Gateway Project. In 2005, the University took a renewed look at the Campus Master Plan and decided to move forward to fully embrace the university’s setting on Lake Mendota by opening up the view from the south end of campus to the lake. This East Campus...

By Emily Connor While many might take the ability to run up flights of stairs or easily navigate a building for granted, limited mobility can make it difficult for some Union patrons to enjoy everything the Memorial Union has to offer. To ensure all members get the same Union experience, the Memorial Union Reinvestment (MUR) team is committed to ensuring the project focuses heavily on increasing accessibility throughout the building. Built in 1928, the Memorial Union was constructed decades before the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA) was...
