Photo sneak peek of Humanimals exhibit now on display

By Zach Thomae From Feb. 3rd to March 20th, the Porter Butts Gallery in the Memorial Union is housing the Humanimals exhibit, featuring human-sized sculptural cabinets of animals. Each animal represents a common animal idiom for human behavior (for example, “pigheaded”), with collages of images showing the ways that humans abuse animals on the inside. Humanimals was created by Gayle Weitz, a professor at Seton Hill University who grew up in Madison and earned an M.A. and Ph.D in Art Education from UW-Madison. We went to the exhibit, and this...

As part of the slew of SnS trips that took place in January, the trip to Lake Tahoe, better known as the “3rd trip” or “alternative trip,” provided exactly what it was mean to: an alternative to the large Steamboat Springs trip and the upcoming Jackson Hole spring break trip. Nestled at the Blue Lake Inn, South Lake Tahoe, the 19 members of the trip enjoyed just about everything, except for the one thing that ski and snowboarders need: snow! Ryan Parsons, Alternative/3rd Trip Director of SnS, said “everyone had fun even though the snow was...

HOOFPRINTS: New Additions to the Hoofer Herd – Hoofer Riding Club

As a self-supporting organization, the Hoofer Riding Club relies heavily on the generosity of its donors.  Nowhere is this more important than in the talented group of school horses that help educate our members.  Our herd is comprised of a variety of breeds from diverse backgrounds, many of whom have had a successful show career. Due to donor generosity, the Hoofer Riding Club recently brought in 2 horses for trial as suitable school horses.  Both horses have settled in well and this week, Beauty, a 15 hand paint quarter horse, officially...

HOOFPRINTS: Strictly Sail 2012 – Hoofers Sailing Team

At the end of January, the University of Wisconsin Sailing Team attended Strictly Sail in Chicago. We volunteered at the convention doing jobs such as handing out wristbands, staffing the information booths and signing attendants up for free magazine subscriptions. We also sold t-shirts, which helps raise money for the team. Lots of Wisconsin fans stopped by our booth to chat, check up on the team or buy a t-shirt. On Friday, Brendan Boylan, of Wisconsin, was chosen as Commodore of the MCSA for the upcoming year during the Midwinter’s...

The first night we arrived, we skied to a wonderful family-owned restaurant across from the lodge. After that, we went to Michigan, where snow was piling up. We spent the day teaching beginners and getting lost on the trail system at ABR. We spent he next few days at North Ends trail system, which crosses the American Birkebeiner trail...
