“Check out” Union South’s Little Free Library

No, that’s not a bird house nestled between newspaper and magazine bins beneath Union South’s central staircase. The dark stained wooden box houses not Robins or Blue Jays, but it does welcome “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “To Kill a Mockingbird.” This is Little Free Library. If you haven’t seen one of these miniature book boxes on a street corner, front yard or public building, you probably will soon. There are over 15,000 Little Free Libraries worldwide, and the number continues to...

Name A Seat Campaign Donor Stories: The ‘Crazy Mother’

Wisconsin Union Theater’s Name A Seat campaign has brought forth personal stories that have taken place in the historic Theater and Union throughout the years. Supporters who give to the campaign are able to engrave a plaque on a seat in the newly renovated Union Theater. Some of the dedicators share a personal connection with the space, including UW-Madison professor of education and Jewish studies Simone Schweber, who devoted a Theater seat to her “crazy” and loving mother. “My mother, to whom the seat is dedicated, was an...

Behind the Scenes of Revelry Music and Arts Festival 2014

By Kayla Schmidt x’15 “We’re no Lollapalooza,” said Revelry public relations coordinator Bess Donoghue. “But we want to be a music festival for campus that stands out and is up to par or even better than other schools’ end-of-the-year festivals.” Here comes Revelry. For the second year in a row, Revelry Music and Arts Festival is gearing up for tunes, talent and artistry to celebrate UW-Madison’s school year coming to a close. Bringing in over 3,000 spectators last year at Union South, a new year brings a new location, new faces and new...

A Lasting Vision: The Craftshop and its Legacy

By Nancy Payne x’16 With the Memorial Union Reinvestment phase 1 west wing renovation nearly complete, we’re looking back at one of the many Wisconsin Union programs getting a major face lift. The Craftshop, soon to be the re-imagined Wheelhouse Studios, has a long history at the Union. Created in 1930, the Craftshop was inspired by recent graduate, Sally Marshall. Sally’s UW Madison Art Department senior thesis explored the necessity for a space on campus that offered artistic opportunities for all. Thanks to Marshall and the...
