Wisconsin Union Seeks Students Passionate about Campus and Community
For many at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) and in the community, the Wisconsin Union is a culmination of the fantastic destinations and activities that we all share.
For some students, the Union offers far more than a place to relax, eat delicious food and learn through experiences for a lifetime. For these students, the Union offers the chance to build lifelong friendships and gain hands-on experiences in multiple fields through Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) leadership opportunities.
Each year, the Wisconsin Union team selects UW-Madison students to organize, promote and execute Union events. The student leaders implement programming through a variety of topic-oriented committees, including Music, Art, Cuisine, Film, Performing Arts, Society & Politics and more.
“It’s a really good feeling when you all come together, and everyone’s working really hard toward making campus better by putting on great events,” said Lily R. Hansen, a senior at UW-Madison and the 2016-2017 WUD vice president of external relations.
WUD leadership positions include three officer positions, 10 committee director positions and the Hoofers Council president position.
“When you’re in the recruitment process, you have to analyze how much time you’re going to put into it and think about if you’re going to just do the minimum or test yourself and stretch the boundaries on what people are already doing and what is possible here,” Hansen said.
Compensation for these service roles includes not only resume-building opportunities but also financial benefits. Officers receive stipends equal to 80 percent of in-state tuition based on the previous year. Committee directors and the Hoofer president receive stipends equal to 60 percent of in-state tuition based on the previous year. Plus, officers and directors receive WisCard stipends.
