Welcome from Wisconsin Union President Iffat Bhuiyan
On behalf of the Wisconsin Union, including the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD), welcome to the start of a new academic year. We hope you’ll join us to have fun, learn and lead.
You may think you don’t know WUD, but it’s very likely you’ve already been to one of our student-led, out-of-classroom events, like a film showing at Union South or a concert on the Memorial Union Terrace.
WUD (pronounced like “wood”) is the board of 16 student-led committees and clubs that organize some of the best out-of-classroom experiences on campus.
During your time on campus, you’re going to get pulled in many different directions. Your WUD student leaders want to make sure that during your time here, you have an opportunity to play. At the Union, that could be anything from going to a student-curated art exhibition to kayaking on Lake Mendota.
I encourage you to also explore intellectual interests through the Union. Think outside the classroom box with lectures hosted by the WUD Distinguished Lecture Series Committee. The Committee recently announced the full fall lecture lineup announced, which is available at union.wisc.edu/dls.
While you are welcome to come have fun and learn at our events, you can also be a leader in making them happen by joining WUD. You may have hesitations and even be scared about joining a committee; don’t be. You’re going to meet great people, make friends, learn real world skills and truly make a difference. Along the way, you’ll probably learn a lot about yourself, too.
This year, we have a lot of new student leaders who are bringing fresh perspectives to what the Union does. Together, we’re aiming to bring our diverse student leaders together to expand our programming and to create events that meet the needs and interests of many communities at UW-Madison.
It’s not too late to join the community or join in on the fun and learning. Learn more at union.wisc.edu/wud.
