Travel Adventure Film Series Brings the World to Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Union Theater celebrates the 57th anniversary of its Travel Adventure Film Series this year with films that bring Taiwan, France and Italy to Wisconsin.
This series features three movies created by filmmakers traveling abroad. The films showcase not only the filmmakers’ incredible experiences, but also provide insight into different cultures and places.
This season’s lineup includes “ the Treasure of Taiwan with Buddy Hatton,” “A Week in Paris with Marlin Darrah” and “My Private Italy with Steve McCurdy.” The screenings occur on select Mondays and Tuesdays in Union South’s Marquee at 7:30 p.m.
The movies are paired with an optional buffet dinner, which is served at 5:30 p.m. in Varsity Hall and features food influenced by the region represented in the film. The filmmaker is also usually in attendance to discuss the film.
“The Travel Adventure Film Series began at a time when traveling was considered more exotic,” said Esty Dinur, the Wisconsin Union Theater marketing and communications director. “The films showed people parts of the world that they could not get to.”
Now, the series is more of a draw for people who have traveled or travel often. It is a way for them to either reminisce about trips that they have already taken or learn about places that they want to go.
The program brings together a variety of people with a shared interest in travel, which allows the guests to learn from each other by discussing their experiences and telling stories.
Each film screening costs the general public $13. However, Union members and UW-Madison students, staff and faculty receive discounted prices. The dinner costs $18 and attendees must reserve their spots at least 10 days prior to the Monday screening.
