In 1978, the Union celebrated its golden anniversary with a 200-pound cake in the shape of the Union, the distribution of 1,000 pounds of milkshakes, and the Hoofers-sponsored “Great Goldfish Giveaway,” which involved dumping 1,000 goldfish in the Library Mall Fountain.
