Students Travel to Serve on Time Off

Many students spend winter or spring break soaking up the sun on a hot beach or conquering ski slopes, but with Alternative Breaks students become leaders and travel to help others.

Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Alternative Breaks is a non-profit, student-run committee that coordinates a number of volunteer experiences for UW-Madison students over winter, spring and summer breaks both domestically and internationally. WUD Alternative Breaks has traveled to many locations in the United States, Asia and Latin America, sometimes partnering with volunteer organizations such as UBELONG to maintain low costs, safety and to ensure a positive experience.

“My favorite thing about Alternative Breaks is the diversity of students who participate,” said Trip Planner Hannah Paulson. “I think the power that volunteering has is incredible. It brings all these people together to work towards a common goal as they learn to navigate each other’s leadership styles and teamwork skills.”

Alternative Breaks provides a unique volunteer experience as it is completely student run and participants are encouraged to assume the role of a leader, communicator and follower. Through different situations and opportunities, students are able to discover where their strong skills lie as Alternative Breaks aims to draw on participants’ strengths to create a well-rounded experience for all participants.
