Spend Spring Break the Wisconsin Union Way, Wherever You Are

The frigid temperatures and mountains of snow that characterize Wisconsin winters can feel neverending, but we promise that the sunny light is at the end of the tunnel—that’s right, spring break is almost here!

Whether you’re planning to spend spring break in Madison, on a beach somewhere warm, or anywhere in between, the Wisconsin Union can help you usher in the new season. Read on for suggestions on how to make the most of your spring break with the Wisconsin Union.

A Wisconsin Union Spring Break In Madison

If you’ll be in Madison from March 11-19, the Union has plenty of activities to help you relax during your week off. Make yourself a Madison to-do list on this adorable notepad from the Terrace Store and see how many items you can check off! (Note: Dining and recreation hours may be limited during spring break, so please check each unit’s hours on the Union website regularly for the most up-to-date information.)

Visit our buildings Memorial Union and Union South to enjoy delicious food and an inviting atmosphere. There are plenty of dining options between the two buildings, so why try a different restaurant for each of your food or beverage needs? Here are some examples to get you started:

  • Weather in March is always a toss-up, so depending on the day’s forecast, you can plan to warm up with a hot latte from Peet’s Coffee or Prairie Fire or cool down with a scoop of rich, refreshing ice cream from the Daily Scoop.
  • Gather a group of your friends, and order a selection of tasty appetizers from der Rathskeller at Memorial Union, like crispy chicken tenders with a side of seasoned tater tots, melty deep-fried cheese curds, or a doughy Bavarian pretzel with mustard and beer cheese sauce.
  • After your round of apps, head on over to the Sett at Union South for the main entree event. The Sett Pub boasts a wide array of signature burgers, flavorful sandwiches and fresh salads, including vegetarian options, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

After you’ve had your fill of food, make your way to Sett Recreation in Union South for some late-night activities. Challenge your friends to a bowling battle, a climbing contest, or a billiards bout, and find out who emerges the victor. Sett Rec also has food and beverages available for purchase if you’re looking to supplement your victory with some celebratory snacks.

Want to get your creative juices flowing now that you finally have some free time? Look no further than Wheelhouse Studios, located in the lower level of Memorial Union. Wheelhouse has three open studios available for your use whenever a class is not taking place and the studio is open. Studio passes are free for UW–Madison students, $6 per day for Wisconsin Union members and $8 per day for community members and include access to a variety of art materials and mediums. Throw pottery in Studio Y, master your metalwork in Studio O or ace acrylic painting in Studio G—the possibilities are as limitless as your imagination.

If you’re feeling stumped on what to create, have no fear! Wheelhouse also offers a selection of DIY projects that you can make in the studio. Use a wood-burning tool to burn a pencil sketch into a wooden canvas, paint a cappuccino mug, or design your own bookmark as the perfect motivation to complete your spring break reading goal.
