Soaking up the last bit of summer

Once again, the fall semester has descended on UW-Madison and the weather has complied beautifully. The air is crisp, the sun provides just the right amount of warmth during the day and the cool evening breezes encourage you to find your favorite sweater. The familiarity of this annual ritual is comfortable and reassuring, just like the programs and events that are on the docket this month at your favorite campus hangout – the Wisconsin Union.

The Memorial Union has a lot to offer in the final days of our 2011 Terraceseason. I encourage you to make plans now to attend the Madison World Music Festival the third weekend in September along with the few remaining outdoor music events before the tables and chairs go away for the winter.  Squeezing every bit of enjoyment out of the Terrace during this time has become a yearly habit for me – one I don’t intend to break. If I’m lucky – and you are, too – perhaps a final sailboat ride will be in store for us as well.

Union South has already hosted its first Badger Bash since re-opening last April, but there are six more on the schedule in the months to come. The event is bigger and better than ever – and the centerpiece of it all, the UW Marching Band, is showcased like never before. There is something for everyone at the new Badger Bash – families, students and loyal UW alumni can all find a place to call their own, both inside the spectacular new building and on the surrounding grounds. And we’re open on your way home after the game, too. Stop by and enjoy the “Sixth Quarter” and the live radio broadcasts from WTSO 1070.

Enjoying the autumn season on this college campus is one of life’s nostalgic moments. Spending time with friends and family at the heart of our campus makes it all the more memorable. I hope to see many of you in the weeks to come – whether it’s cheering on the Badgers before kick-off or sliding into a brightly colored chair one last time along the lake. Plan to stop by your campus home. You’ll be glad you did.

All my best,

Mark
