MUR Update: discussion ensues on proposed Theater lounge
By Emily Connor
As Memorial Union Reinvestment project plans progress, a variety of opinions have arisen regarding one critical piece of the building project: the proposed Theater lounge addition. Yet, arguments against the proposed addition have done little to explain the reasons why the addition is an important piece of the overall Reinvestment process.
Currently, Memorial Union Reinvestment project plans include a proposed Theater lounge addition, a glass-walled student lounge space that will extend out from the current Union Theater lobby. The referendum that included the addition of the Theater lounge space was passed in 2006, with a student majority voting in favor of the Reinvestment project. Back then, the addition was called the “Lakeview Lounge” and was a rectangular shape rather than the circular shape proposed now. However, these remain the two main differences with what was passed by the students and what has evolved during the design process.
Although the addition is vital to providing needed student lounge and Theater space, some opponents argue the glass-walled addition will block views from the Terrace, limit Terrace seating and be used for private parties.
