Modern jazz vocalist to perform at Union Theater
Dianne Reeves, famous jazz vocalist, will be performing in the Wisconsin Union Theater Friday, April 8. The Union Theater and Wisconsin Union Directorate Performing Arts Committee will also take this opportunity to announce much of its 2011-2012 season.
Reeves has been interested in music since she was a small child living in Detroit. She began singing with a big band by the time she was 16, earning national recognition by jazz educators.
Steve Braunginn, host of Strictly Jazz Sounds on WORT, says: “Dianne Reeves has found her own sound, her own soul. Her emotive, capturing style stirs emotions in listeners who know that Ms. Reeves will give all of her soul to them for that one particular moment. While all jazz musicians, including vocalists, are unique in their own instruments and styles, it’s all about connecting with the audience in a way that sends shivers down your back, raises goose bumps on your arms, draws your eye-lids down, so that listening is all that’s taking place… You know it’s a good one, a good piece of music, a great vocalist when tears begin to fill your eyes, when you drop your chin down to your chest, close your eyes, and be one with the music.”
Reeves is probably best known for her performance in George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck, the Academy Award-nominated film that chronicles Edward R. Murrow’s confrontation with Senator Joseph McCarthy. This soundtrack recording gave Reeves her fourth Best Jazz Vocal Grammy in 2006.
