Making Memories of a Lifetime Possible Through Union Membership
During a typical year, student leaders from the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD), the Union’s student programming board, create more than 1,000 free and low-cost events for Wisconsin Union members and guests to enjoy. The students in the 11 committees and six clubs that make up WUD work hard to plan, promote and execute a diverse event lineup throughout the year, ranging from game nights to free film screenings to live music performances. These events are made possible through the support of you, our valued Union members, whose membership dollars and purchases at our buildings and in our online store help support Union programming.
The 2020-21 academic year presented many unique challenges, with the COVID-19 pandemic altering typical Union operations. Union programming occurred virtually for the majority of the year, but the continued support from you, our incredible members, allowed for hundreds of events to still take place—just in a slightly different format than usual. Through membership support and virtual events, we were able to reach audiences outside of just Madison, making us all feel more connected to one another during such an isolating time.
At the end of the year, we were finally able to welcome members and guests back into our buildings, Memorial Union and Union South, as well as the Memorial Union Terrace. We reopened the Terrace with live music performances, free film showings, art activities and Outdoor UW equipment rentals and events. While not our usual entertainment schedule in 2021, we are excited to return to a summer of frequent programming during Terrace season 2022. We are grateful to have made it through the past two challenging years thanks to you, and we now arrive at the other side of this difficult time, looking back on what we were able to accomplish and looking forward to many future experiences for a lifetime.
