Hooferpalooza Unites Generations of Outing Club Members
What do you get when you take over 50 Hoofer Outing Club members and alumni and put them all together? Hooferpalooza!
After two previous gatherings in 2001 and 2011, the Hoofers Outing Club once again came together for whitewater paddling, lake canoeing, hiking and festivities celebrating the club and it’s members–both past and present. The event was designed to create opportunities to meet people and take part in paddling river runs pioneered by the first Hoofers.
“There are strong friendships built through Hoofers throughout the years,” said Dan York, UW grad and Outing Club Water Safety Chair. “Hooferpalooza is a nice way to connect old time paddlers with new members and a younger generation.”
During the week of May 4, Hoofers from as far as New Zealand gathered at the Unions for paddling and socializing, followed by a trip to Goodman Park in Marinette County for food, campfire gatherings and more outdoor activities.
“It was awesome to see such a large group of current members with modern gear mixed with older members and their old-school boats,” Dan said. “Seeing that great diversity of ages and equipment proves the testament to friendships and past trips.”
The members were able to relive and retell stories while getting back into a boat for maybe the first time in a long time.
“I’ve made so many friends through Hoofers and members keep these connections alive,” Dan said. “Hooferpalooza just provides another opportunity to keep those connections.”
