Hoofer Mountaineering Club – Spring Break Trip to Red Rock Canyon
Over the past spring break, members of the Hoofer’s Mountaineering club took a trip to Red Rock Canyon, Nevada.
Located outside of Las Vegas, Red Rocks is known for its long, moderate routes in the traditional style. The mountaineers had to contend with high winds and surprisingly low temperatures, but managed to accumulate an impressive list of area classics.
Different groups separated out to hit all different areas of Red Rocks, with some focusing on single pitch trad, some on multiple pitch climbs and some deciding to work on the numerous sport routs spread around the park. Routes on the list included classics such as Cat in The Hat (6 pitch 5.6), Dancin’ with a God (sport 10a), Johnny Vegas (5.7), and Hot Flash (10 pitch 5.8).
Climbing was not the only thing on the agenda, however. Some of the Hoofers ventured into Las Vegas and onsited a daring foot traverse of the entire strip with no beta and no falls, 10 miles round trip! Nights were spent huddling under the park shelter attempting to keep warm, socialize, and plan the next day’s adventures.
Highlights included multipitch 5.3s, sketchy runouts, and campground yoga sessions. A total of 9 Hoofer Mountaineers went on the trip.
