Five Things you Didn’t Know About the Wisconsin Union

No matter how many times you’ve been to Memorial Union or Union South, believe it or not, there are many things you probably don’t know about them and the organization behind them, called the Wisconsin Union. From pastries to hotels, there are many surprises to be uncovered. I am going to explain and maybe surprise you with five things you most likely didn’t know.

Community Union, Not a Student Union

The Wisconsin Union is known for creating experiences that are the heart and soul of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Since it was founded in 1907, it has enriched the lives of many members, students and visitors alike. The Union is intended to connect students, faculty, members and visitors through experiences for a lifetime.

Although many may think that since the Union’s buildings are located on campus that it’s a student union; but the truth is that it is a community union. Since its beginning, the Wisconsin Union has strived to create out-of-classroom learning. The Union is also committed to community-first experiences that bring everyone together.

House-Made Pastries and Bagels

Ever wondered how some of the Wisconsin Union pastries and bagels are so delicious and fresh? That’s because most of the pastries and bagels at Wisconsin Union dining options  are made in-house. The excellent sous chef, Maria Conforti works to craft one-of-a-kind recipes.

Many of the Wisconsin Union favorite recipes are available to make in the comfort of your own kitchen. Bake items like the iconic Brown Butter Shortbread Cookies or the tasty Rice Krispies Treats!

Three Hotels

Many people aren’t aware that within Wisconsin Union-run Memorial Union, Union South and the Fluno Center, there are three hotels!

If you’re coming back to Madison for a visit or an event, the Wisconsin Union’s hotels are the place to be. With excellent locations in downtown Madison, you won’t miss a thing, and you’ll love all the places to which you can easily bike, walk or take the free campus bus. Plus, enjoy our incredible amenities, such as on-site dining and on-site or nearby parking. Book your stay for an upcoming event!

House-Made Salad Dressings and Soups

Like our pastries and bagels, many don’t know that our salad dressing and soups are made in-house. Specifically, the community-favorite ranch dressing is made right in our kitchen. A couple of years ago, the kitchen revamped the recipe, and it can be enjoyed right at der Rathskellar in Memorial Union.

There are many infamous Wisconsin Union recipes available such as the Copycat Rath Sauce and the Wisconsin Union Sausage Gravy. It’s time to get cooking and experience your own take on a Wisconsin Union favorite!

Almost 100 Years of Memorial Union

Last but certainly not least, many people aren’t aware of how long Memorial Union has been around. Since opening its doors in 1928, Memorial Union has fostered community and strives to create learning beyond the classroom.

Memorial Union has become a place for community members, students, visitors, faculty and more to come together. No matter the season, Memorial Union has an experience waiting for you! Stay tuned in the coming months for how we will celebrate Memorial Union’s centennial birthday.
