Summer Film Coordinator’s Top Picks from the 2019 Film Lineup

You’re sure to feel nostalgic this summer at Terrace After Dark’s film series, called Lakeside Cinema. The Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Film Committee chose the films based on the themes, “Grow Up!” and Spielberg Sundays. So grab some Babcock Ice Cream, a brat or maybe a dish from the BBQ Stand, and join us for our 20 must-see films.

WUD Summer Film Coordinator Barb Rasmussen gave us her top four picks from the film lineup this summer, and you won’t want to miss them! Check them out below.

1. July 7: “Jaws” (1975)

“Our shorter Sunday series this summer is Spielberg Sundays. Steven Spielberg movies are always crowd pleasers, so I’m excited to bring his best movies to the Terrace. Of all these films, ‘Jaws’ cannot be missed for a lakeside screening. It’s a classic that many people have already seen, but being able to watch it outside on the Terrace is a unique viewing experience.”

2. July 22: “The Way, Way Back” (2013)

“This film is probably the least well-known of all the movies on the Terrace this summer, but it’s the one I am most looking forward to! ‘The Way, Way Back’ is the perfect coming-of-age story for summer. Fourteen-year-old Duncan goes with his mother and her boyfriend to spend summer vacation near Cape Cod and eventually finds a second family with the staff of the local waterpark. This movie has an amazing cast, including Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Allison Janney, Maya Rudolph and Sam Rockwell. It’s bound to be a new favorite summer film.”

3. Aug. 12: “Mamma Mia!” (2008)

“‘Mamma Mia!’ is one of my favorite movies, and I can’t wait to watch it on the Terrace. It’s bright and fun, plus has an amazing soundtrack and Meryl Streep. Everything you want in a summer movie! It’s sure to have you singing on the dock.”

4. Aug. 19: “Back to School” (1986)

“‘Back to School’ is perfect for fans of ‘80s comedies like ‘Caddyshack’ or the National Lampoon movies. Legendary comedian Rodney Dangerfield stars as Thornton Melon, a rich father who enrolls in college with his son to encourage him to stay in school. However, Thornton ends up becoming the biggest party animal on campus. I’m especially excited to play this movie because much of it was filmed here at UW-Madison, including shots of Bascom Hill and Library Mall. It will be really fun to see the Terrace on-screen while sitting on the Terrace!”

Come out to the Terrace, bring your family and friends, and check out these timeless films on the most scenic screen in town. With Lake Mendota in the background, you won’t want to leave your sunburst chair at the end of the night.
