The Memorial Union Terrace saw many decked out in black Saturday, May 17, and although some were mourning the loss of their undergraduate career, the day was far from a funeral. Happy graduates donned their caps, gowns, sashes, cords and pins and marched to the Terrace before and after they marched into Camp Randall to celebrate Commencement for a chance to get their picture taken atop one of the giant Terrace chairs. Check out what some of the graduates had to say on this very special occasion and browse through some of our favorite snapshots of the day.

“I’m a little torn about not being able to walk up on stage today, but they made up for it by letting us jump around!”

“After graduation, I’m moving to Philadelphia for my new job–gotta pay off all those college loans!”

“This one is for honors, and this sash is a stole of gratitude. After graduation I’m giving it to the person that helped me through school.”

“I’m wearing a lei because I’m from California and that’s normally what we do there for graduation. There’s no real flower leis in Wisconsin, so my parents bought me this fake one.”

“I’ll be working right across Lake Mendota near that water tower and those smoke stacks. Staying close and earning some money.”

“I’m holding out for Russell Wilson to come as a guest speaker for graduation. How perfect would that be?”
