For over 70 years, the gospel group The Blind Boys of Alabama has traveled the country performing for everyone from Martin Luther King Jr. to the President of the United States. You won’t have to go far to see them perform this year; the multi-award winning group will be performing at the Wisconsin Union Theater Thursday Dec. 1 opening with gospel singer Liz Vice. Following the performances, a special meet-and-greet will be held for Union members attending the event!

Few music groups have a story as unique as The Blind Boys of Alabama, which formed when current leader Jimmy Carter first sang with his fellow classmates at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939. Since touring the south during Jim Crow laws, the group went on the perform at the White House for three different presidents, earn five Grammy awards, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy and collaborate with modern artists including Justin Vernon of Bon Iver.

The show won’t stop once the curtain closes: Union members can attend a private post show with The Blind Boys of Alabama and opener Liz Vice.

“We’re pleased that we can invite our Wisconsin Union members for a special meet-and-greet after the performance,” Wisconsin Union Membership Director Jan Viney said.

Union members have the chance to purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $35, $31 and $25. UW-Madison students can also get discounted tickets for $10. The performance is presented by the Wisconsin Union Directorate’s Performing Arts Committee, with support from Capital City Hues, WORT 89.9FM and WSUM.

The highly decorated group will be right on campus at 8 p.m. Thursday Dec. 1, with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Click here to buy tickets and experience The Blind Boys of Alabama live.
