Abby’s Picks for Art Classes to Take This Fall

With all the natural beauty surrounding you as summer transitions to fall, there’s no better time than now to use the changing seasons as inspiration for making beautiful art of your own. Wheelhouse Studios, located in the lower level of Memorial Union, is once again offering many in-person classes that span a wide range of mediums. Wherever your creative passion lies, there’s sure to be a class that will light the artistic spark within you. Without further ado, here are my picks for art classes to sign up for this fall:

Ceramics

An artist learns to throw pottery in 2016

New to the world of ceramics? Consider signing up for Intro to Wheel Pottery, a five-class course in which you’ll learn the basics of throwing, glazing and decorating pottery creations. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as feeling smooth clay turn underneath your hands, or watching said clay evolve into your own handmade mug or bowl that you can keep forever. If you already have some ceramics experience under your belt, Continuing Wheel Pottery will be the perfect class for you.

Fabric Arts

Do you love the look and purpose of reusable bags but want one that’s specifically you? We’ve got just the thing with a fabric arts course in which you’ll create your own Sustainable Tote Bag. Your fully-lined tote bag will be useful, fashionable and unique, as no two tote bags from the class will look the same. Bring your personality, creativity and prior sewing knowledge to this advanced course—you’re sure to have sew much fun.

Jewelry and Metals

Learn the basics of metalworking in the Intro to Ring Making course, in which you’ll learn to make a simple silver band that will accessorize any outfit. All levels are welcome, and you’ll leave with knowledge of techniques such as annealing, soldering and forming, as well as your finished ring.

Martial Arts

To create art using your own body and focused mind, try our Intro to Kenjutsu course, in which martial artist Amos E. Smith will teach you the art of kenjutsu, Japanese swordsmanship. You will learn how to control your body, breath and sword by learning basic movements and breathing techniques and eventually build up to basic attacks and responses in partner practice.

Painting

An artist paints a mountain scene in a Wine and Canvas course

If a relaxing painting and wine night sounds like your dream, a Wheelhouse Wine and Canvas course is about to make your dream come true. You will learn step-by-step how to paint picturesque fall scenes, ranging from the Wisconsin countryside to a sunset silhouette. Settle in, sip some wine and soak in the cozy fall vibes.

Photography

Capture the beauty of the changing seasons in our Photographing the Fall Landscape course. Bring your DSLR camera, owner’s manual and excitement to learn the art of taking the perfect photograph. You will learn photography skills that will last you a lifetime, including the basics of landscape photography, as well as editing and printing images.

Printmaking

If you have images floating through your mind that you want to bring to life, sign up for our Relief Printing course. You will be introduced to many different kinds of relief printing and will ultimately get to design and print your very own creation using your new knowledge.

If any of these classes caught your eye, sign up now to secure your spot. For a full list of Wheelhouse’s fall classes, click here. We can’t wait to see what you create!
