Student-Led Theater Season Features Wide Range of Performances

Student leaders are the heart of the Wisconsin Union. Whether it is planning a music festival or hosting a comedian, the Wisconsin Union Theater provides an outlet for creative expression. For the upcoming 2018-19 Wisconsin Union Theater Season, student leaders looked to create a lineup that will connect the community to performances by a wide range of performers.

These student leaders are part of the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Performing Arts Committee, the student-run committee that programs the Union Theater season, ranging from modern dance to classical music to world music, jazz, comedy and beyond.

“This season is amazing,” WUD Performing Arts Director Amanda Venske said. “Every event [in the series] is something you can get excited about, and there is truly something for everyone.”

This year’s season features both classical and modern performers like Cantus, an a capella group that performs works from Beethoven to the Beatles. While Cantus mixes old with new on Nov. 11 at Memorial Union, there are plenty of artists that will be taking the stage to present performances that you otherwise wouldn’t have in the Madison arts scene.

For example, you can see groups like The Seldoms, a dance company that takes on social issues through movement; I’m With Her, a band with folk, Americana and bluegrass sounds; the Pedrito Martinez Group, a band whose performance will feature Latin-jazz beats; and The Flop House, a comedy group who watches critical or commercial film flops and then discusses the ways in which they are terrible.

The season will also feature performances from the following:

  • Lise de la Salle and Christian-Pierre La Marca (Dec. 8, 2018)
  • Imani Winds (Feb. 1, 2019)
  • Cuarteto Casals (March 1, 2019)
  • Apollo’s Fire (March 10, 2019)
