Now that we are well into June, buzz about Concerts on the Square has begun as the Madison community eagerly anticipates the beginning of this exciting summer tradition. Grab your blankets or lawn chairs, a group of friends, your favorite beverages and snacks and get ready to be serenaded by featured members of the reputable Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. Concerts on the Square are held on the King Street corner of the Capitol Square at 7:00 p.m. every Wednesday from June 25 until July 30. A little advice—COTS are always crowded, so get there early for a good spot and you’re sure to have an evening of fun, friends and great entertainment.

2. Try Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Stand-up paddleboarding, also known as SUP, is a great excuse to try something new and get out on the water. Plus, it’s super accessible with Outdoor UW rentals. Sports, sunshine, family and friends–it doesn’t get much better.  If you’re not yet familiar with the Madison Mallards, they are a collegiate summer baseball team that is a part of the Northwoods League. Watching a game is a great way to get outside and support a local team. Check out their schedule and plan a date to hit the ball park—this summer evening will definitely be a homerun.

4. Catch a Concert or Film at the Terrace

Finally, Terrace After Dark season has arrived at the Memorial Union! We already love the colorful sunburst chairs and the beautiful lake view, but during the summer, the Terrace escalates to a whole new level after the sun sets. There is an excellent lineup of music and all of the Monday movies fall under the theme of “firsts.” So get ready to jam to some great bands and watch some classics—it’s impossible not to like and it’s going on all summer!

5. Tour a Brewery

Opting for Sundance Cinemas Madison in Hilldale Mall will surely add some flare to your movie experience. In addition to traditional concessions, Sundance also offers a variety of excellent food and beverage options from pizza and sandwiches to beer and cocktails—which can all accompany you into the luxury theaters! And bonus, head over a little early and enjoy the Rooftop Bar & Bistro before your movie—who likes previews anyways?

Everybody should have a summer reading list—it’s the perfect activity to accompany lounging in the sun or enjoying a moment of relaxation after work. Share your list with some of your favorite people, decide on the first book to delve into and you have the perfect excuse to get together, snack on some appetizers and chat about the biggest shockers or favorite moments from your weekly chapters. Whether your style is more Nicholas Sparks or Gillian Flynn, you’re sure to enjoy summer evenings filled with books and banter. Check out the New York Times Best Sellers for inspiration.

Pick a day to see for yourself why the Madison community loves our lakes. Biking this 12-mile loop takes approximately 1-2 hours. It’s definitely worth the time as the Lake Loop stretches along Monona and through beautiful neighborhoods, parks and gardens, offering a variety of lovely views to enrich your ride. If you plan on driving to the route, parking is available at multiple locations along the path including Olin-Turville Park or the Monona Terrace Ramp.

Alright, everybody—now it’s time to get out those notebooks and pens and start checking off your list. Happy summer!
