Sending off our Seniors: Andrew Heisler

Spring_sort09_4990

As graduation time quickly approaches and a new alumni class is born, we are taking time to acknowledge some of the many sensational seniors here at the Wisconsin Union. Throughout all of May we will be highlighting these individuals, asking them to reflect back on their time here at UW-Madison and what they are looking forward to in the future. First, we are featuring our very own Andrew Heisler, a social media intern in the marketing department who not only shapes and molds the Union Facebook and Twitter pages, but works closely with all of us Terrace Views contributors as well.

Thinking about your days as a UW student…

Role in the Union/Union committee:

I’ve been the Creative Social Media Intern in the Marketing Department since January 2013.

Top 3 favorite things about Madison:

  • The school spirit
  • The restaurants on State Street
  • The Terrace

Favorite event in the Union you were a part of:squares

I really enjoyed my role in this year’s April Fool’s joke involving the redesigning of the Terrace chairs. It was fun being able to work with a number of different departments including marketing, membership and graphics in order to pull off a prank in about 48 hours. Our hard work garnered a record amount of engagement on both Twitter and Facebook and while those who didn’t realize it was a joke were rather upset, I’d say it was a smashing success.

Go-to Madison meal:

If I’m carrying cash on me, I try to stop and get lunch at Mediterranean Café. It’s super quick, really fresh and amazingly delicious.

Favorite past-time:

Making music mashups

Favorite Babcock ice cream flavor:

Union Utopia. Not even close.

One thing you wish you could relive:

If I could go back and attend the Ohio State vs. Wisconsin basketball game at the Kohl Center back in February of 2011, that would be amazing. Not only did we beat the best team in the country at that time (OSU was No. 1), but we got to storm the court afterwards. I don’t know whether that was cooler than storming State Street after making it to the Final Four, but both were incredible.

Looking ahead…

Plans after graduation:

I will be interning at an advertising agency in downtown Minneapolis called Olson. I’ll be working in their media planning (Connections Strategy) department.

What you are looking forward to after graduation:

I’m looking forward to learning what working full-time is like. I’m also excited to see if my interest in media planning will turn into a full-blown passion. I’ve heard that an internship is one of the best ways to break into advertising so I’m very fortunate that I’ll have the opportunity to learn the trade from veterans of the business.

What you will miss most about UW Madison:

I will miss the proximity to my friends. At UW, I’m never more than a bike ride away from any of my friends. When we go out on the weekends, we can walk back together. A lot of my friends are juniors, so once I’m out on my own, living in my own place, I imagine it’ll be harder to maintain those relationships.

Most valuable lessons and experiences you’ve had at the Union:

I think I have a very strong network of people in the marketing department. I’m connected on LinkedIn with current as well as past employees and each and every person seems interested in my personal growth and career search. I know that I plan to come back to the marketing department to say hello when I come back to Madison for a visit and I can confidently say that if my coworkers still work there, they’ll genuinely be interested in seeing what I’ve been up to.

One thing you hope to see from yourself:

I hope that I’ll develop a passion in a specific area and run with it. I try to seize opportunities when they’re presented, but they aren’t always obvious. Hopefully I’ll make smart, calculated risks in my career and will work hard enough to see the fruits of my labors.
